Second Semester Struggles – Creating Your Own Fun

Second semester has been great, don’t get me wrong but I feel like I have been completely engrossed in school work and haven’t been able to fully appreciate the amazing time I’ve been having here. It doesn’t help that I am writing this in the midst of midterm week (4 papers and 3 tests, yikes) but the problem of separating school time and fun time is something I’ve been struggling with.

This past weekend is no example of my schedule since I found out some terrible news* on Friday that has left me a wreck since then but I know it will get better. And to make it worse, I had required meetings to attend that night and all of Saturday. Besides that, I wrote papers, 3 of them and my brain was so fried. The fun I had this weekend? I went to brunch with my roommate and her family and my other best friend. Not every weekend is this school consumed but I am the type of person who struggles to focus on fun when my to-do list is overflowing. 

*My parents told me that my pet bunny of 7 years had to be put down the previous Monday. Honestly, I haven’t cried this hard in a while. Thumper was my first and only pet and it’s safe to say I was heartbroken to hear he had died. I am thankful that my parents waited until the end of the week to tell me because last week was just as hectic as this week but it made me long for home all weekend. Fortunately I’ll be heading that way soon and can be with my mom and dad! I am also so thankful for the amazing friends I have here that comforted me and especially my roommate who sat and cried with me while helping me through it, I am so lucky to have such great friends here!*

Basically, midterms are not my friend and I have so much to look forward to with Spring break and my trip to New York City on Friday. To stop this pity party I’m having over here (sorry guys!) I’ve decided to become more conscious of taking a break from school and allowing and accepting myself to have more fun. My friend Shannon and I were talking about how we both struggle with this and this past Monday it nearly caused us to miss a fabulous and fun event hosted by our favorite Lilly store downtown, the Pink Bee (@pinkbeewestend on instagram, follow them, you won’t regret it). Because we were both aware of our situation we decided to make time for fun instead of taking a study break on our phone while in the library we went!

We got to meet the girls who drove the jeep down here and they work as PR and showroom girls for Lilly’s team, talk about a dream job!

If you are like me, creating your own fun is something you will have to be incredibly conscious of and actively try at in order to take a break from the stresses of school (don’t worry mom and dad, studying has been my priority, I promise I’m not slacking). Below I have created some ideas of how to create your own fun in order to have separate time for school and fun since fun is always overlooked!

I hope y’all don’t take this post the wrong way and don’t think of it as me complaining but instead see it as me being completely real. Oftentimes I don’t post the negatives but only the positives since that causes me to be more optimistic and is so much more entertaining for y’all to read so I really hope this post doesn’t turn you away.
